‘So what age are we living in now?’ Someone asked me the other day. I thought for a moment. Is it the age of Computers? Mobile Phones? Internet? Well, the real question is, what do we use all these for? The answer is obvious, Information. Are we not inundated by the Information overload? Our brain is constantly bombarded by all kinds of information bytes. So much so, that we even forget when and where we got them from. And we easily mix up the details. No wonder our brain gets confused. But that is not all. The bigger danger is, we tend to believe most of it, even act on some of it without verifying the accuracy. There is a new word coined for this now, ‘Brain rot’ and Oxford Dictionary has said it is the word of the year!
It would be okay if we just leave it at that. But we are sensitive human beings. Just like what we eat affects our body, what we hear or see affects our mind greatly. And we get stressed easily. Knowingly or unknowingly. It builds up. And then it starts showing up in the forms of ailments. It is very simple. Thoughts are subtle. And the smallest part of our body is a cell. Thoughts are closely entangled with the cells and they affect each other. Now you can see why our body reacts to the environment we live in.
Have you observed how the conversation goes in a party?
Someone starts, ‘hey, I have not seen you for a long time, where have you been?’
The other person responds, ‘Oh, I fell in the bathroom, got my leg fractured, so was recovering from operation. I am good now.’
The first person, ‘You are lucky, my aunt fell from stairs, got her brain damaged and is still in the hospital.’
Now you can see where this conversation is going. It gets worse as each one wants to make his story sound more devastating. No wonder, when you come home from the party you keep thinking of the worst scenario involving you and you get depressed. Add to this the constant disaster stories aired by the TV channels, as that sells better than the good news stories. If this is not enough, we have social media which spreads any debacles, real or made up, like wildfire. So, what chance do you have to remain upbeat? If you keep your head buried in those stories you are bound to feel that the end of the world is near!!
So, what do you do to overcome this? Firstly, remember that just like it is your choice what food you eat, it is you who decides what goes into your ears and what you see. You need to exercise this discretion. Change the channel, turn off the TV, leave the heated discussion in the parties. Choose the right company, connect with people who are inspiring – and there are many of them around.
Remember that ultimately it is your mind that is churning all the thoughts, all the inputs. You can practice allowing only positive thoughts, motivating people, beautiful nature into your mind. That will lead you to trust the Divine more, let him take care of the world. And slowly you will learn not to get ruled by the world but to influence the surrounding, to project your positivity onto others, spreading the beautiful fragrance of your pure and divine self. And soon you will see the wonder it does to your body also.
